Tuscany with its Chianti is undoubtedly the best known wine region in the world. Furthermore, great names have contributed to give prestige to its wine production, which have now have become part of the myth, but this is not the time and place to talk about it.

In the south of Tuscany, there is a small paradise called Maremma. In addition to the well-known Morellino di Scansano Docg, there is a less known, more timid denomination that, almost silently, produces surprising wines. To understand the heterogeneity of Maremma Doc production, it is necessary to start from its disciplinary which allows the cultivation and production of many varieties, many of which are international. The rich and very varied Maremma Terroir allows the production of wines that surprise for their elegance, their balance, but above all, for their territorial recognition. In the descriptions that we will provide  you in this article, Maremma and Tuscany were always in the glass, without therefore getting lost in the homologation of the international grape.

We will analyse three great reds, three different grape varieties, three great expressions of Maremma: a Morellino di Scansano Docg (how could we possibly miss miss!), a Maremma Doc Merlot, a Toscana Igt Pinot Noir.

Roccapesta 2018, Morellino di Scansano, 14% alc.

The Roccapesta company cultivates its grapes in an artisanal way, dedicating great attention and care to the vineyard; the result is in fact a wine that vigorously contradicts the common idea (it must be admitted) of the fame of this appellation now associated with a simple wine. This Morellino di Scansano stands out very well in the same way as the most famous Tuscan wines.  It is produced with 96% Sangiovese and 4% Ciliegiolo vinified separately which after assembly spend 12 months in wooden barrel  to finish 12 months in the bottle before being put on the market.

It is a wine that leaves its mark, that is remembered, that stands out from the crowd.

Color: ruby red with crystalline brightness

Bouquet: intense notes of violet, ripe and succulent red fruit, pleasant notes of herbaceous freshness that recall the balsamic scents of the Mediterranean scrub.

Taste: the olfactory notes are confirmed and enriched by non-invasive spicy aromas. The freshness and pleasantness of the sip are elegantly closed in a good persistence.

Temerario 2013, Toscana Igt, Pinot Nero, 13% alc.

The Casavyc company wanted to distinguish itself by focusing on uncommon vines in Tuscany. Pinot Noir is a sophisticated and complex vine just think of the wines of Bourgogne, refinement and maturation enhance its distinctive characteristics, for this reason the wine ages for 5 years in old barrels. Eclectic and elegant, the harvest takes place at the end of August in order to maintain the acidity that will not be lost in the long rest in wood. It is important to underline the uniqueness of this pinot noir which is totally different from the wines produced in northern Italy.

Color: ruby red with garnet hints

Bouquet: at first glance the notes of cherry and black currant, followed by the aromas of white pepper and liquorice. So far everything is normal for a Pinot Noir, but the surprise is the  mint and Mediterranean scrub with a light vanilla finish.

Taste: 5 years in barrel give this wine an unforgettable softness and roundness; after the caressing attack of the velvety body, which confirms all the scents perceived in the olfactory examination, there is the support of a freshness that is still alive despite the 7 years after the harvest. The persistence is remarkable.

Oci Ciornie 2016, Maremma Doc, Merlot, 14.5%a alc.

The Tenuta 12 company certainly has a very fascinating history.  We are not going to discuss about this is now, but the name of the wine may be enough to arouse your curiosity. This wine made from pure Merlot grapes, is characterized by elegance. The work in the vineyards and in the cellar is oriented towards respect for the raw material. The result is a sumptuous, rich and generous glass of wine. The vineyards are located in a strategic position whose microclimate prevents excessive stress. The care in the cellar, where each step is carried out with skill by the vigneron, results in a surprising product: an unexpected Merlot Maremmano!

Color: intense ruby red

Bouquet: The first impact is rich in red fruits, currants and blueberries, then comes the notes of plum, spices, cinnamon, pepper all enclosed by the embrace of vanilla, as the wine ages 24 months in new barrels.

Taste: The softness of the tannin is what surprised us. All the olfactory notes are confirmed with a long persistence. The Tannin is velvety in this full-bodied wine.

This concludes the story of how we perceived the Maremma through the tasting of these 3 wines. We hope to be able to do it live and in person soon. In the meantime, for any information write us here
