PROGRAM
After a drive of 55 minutes from Naples, three or two destinations out of Tufo, Montemiletto, Montefusco, and Taurasi will be chosen, depending on availability and day of the week, for the enchanting immersion in the history of Medieval Irpinia. The experience will start with a private visit of the first castle and/or town, followed by a private visit to a local winery and vineyard, which will conclude with a technical tasting of their wines. Every destination is unique and diverse.
The wine-tasting will be led by a dedicated sommelier who will start the experience with an anthropological introduction to the history of wine in the world, Italy, Campania, and in Irpinia – a region within the region – with the support of a PowerPoint presentation of 20 minutes approx. The experience will continue with an introduction to the indigenous wines, seasonally and carefully chosen to pair with local appetizers proposed for the event. The sommelier will tune in on the guest’s level, and teach basic wine inspection techniques, food-wine pairing strategies, and, where requested and needed, further examine in depth any topic demanded.
Irpinia Background information
Irpinia is a historical and geographical region in southern Italy, located in the eastern part of the province of Avellino in Campania. It has a rich and varied history, especially in the medieval period, when it was a contested territory among different feudal lords and dynasties. One of the most distinctive features of Irpinia is its castellated density, meaning the high number of castles, that dot its hilly and mountainous areas. These castles were built from the Longobard domination (568-774) to the Aragonese rule (1442-1503), and reflect the different architectural styles and influences of each Some of the most notable castles in Irpinia are: Avella, Summonte, Ariano Irpino, Gesualdo, Lauro, Monteverde and Rocca San Many of these castles have been restored and are open to visitors, hosting museums, events and cultural activities.
